1997 540i not reading key.

my 97 540i seems to not be reading the key. the car will not start with the key. i took it in to a shop and they told me i might have to replace the key...is there any such thing of "no key read"?? if so, would i have to replace any parts of the ignition mechanism once i get a new key done??Thanks...
