my 1990 caprice wile driving down the road, makes a kinda of clicking or scraping noise, gets faster as spped increases, is this the speedometer cable going bad or is this the gauge cluster going bad ? I bought a new cable, cheap, to replace it just in case thats what it is

It might be the speedo cable drying out. I had same problem with my old Caprice, got it lubed, seemed to fix the problem. I have the same issue with my *new* one.

Definitely sounds like a speedo cable. You don't need to replace it. You will have to pull the speedo cluster out in order to get to the cable - but it's not difficult. Once you separate the whole cable from the back of the speedometer (don't pull out too hard on the speedo head, there's also the VSS attached to the back and the wires break easily - I speak from experience here), you can pull the flexible cable from its sheath. Make sure not to let it touch anything in the interior - it stains seats really well. Take a little bit of wheel bearing grease and lightly coat the entire cable as you feed it back into the sheath. Once it's all the way in (you won't be able to turn it by hand once it's indexed with the speedo driven gear on the tranny) you can snap it back onto the back of the speedo head and reassemble everything. Now you shouldn't have any more squeaking or clicking for at least 20k miles...

You dont necesaraly need to replce it, try lubing it first with some graphite. If that doesnt work, then replace it by following silicon's instructions.

My idea is a lot of work for someone who doesn't do it often, but it's less work than replacing the cable.
