Hello everyone! I would just like to say that this site is awesome. I have been many times to get insight on the problems I have had with my car. Finally, I decided to post and announce my presence. I have a 97 GP GT. Recently, my transmission went out. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to get it rebuilt or buy a new one. I have a mechanic who says he can get a used one and install it all for 700.00. Is this too much or a great deal. Thanks in advance.

Make sure he changes the shift and TCC solenoids before putting the used trans in. It's easy to do while the trans is out, and can't be done with the trans in. Welcome to the Forums.

I have to agree with Bob. That is a great price especially with labor. Make sure that the fluid and filter is changed after installation. A full rebuild on my GTP was $2400.

Alot of shops wont supply used parts and do the labor...Problem is , if they get a bad tranny at the junkyard then they are responsible if it doesnt work and have to take it out and bring it back to the junkyard, and do the job again...Alot of shops will tell you to get the part and they wont warranty it....Honestly $700 almost sounds too good to be true.....Before he does the work ask him for a written estimateb and a written warranty...He may get a little defensive when you ask this. Tell him its for your boss, because your boss is paying for the repair since you use the car for work.

They've got rebuilt 4T65E and HD trannies on Ebay for $795. That includes a reman. torque convertor. So whatever he is being charged for a used tranny is probably fair. I got a rebulit with warranty by Phoenix Retrans. for a '01 Impala LS (Series II 3800 & 4T65E). Cost was $795 for tranny and $375.00 total labor to swap it out. Only other expense was gas ($80/round trip) and one night in a motel room in Phoenix. :biggrin:

Thanks for the advice guys. The mechanic is a family member and he does fix his mistakes if he makes one. We are going to put it in on Wed. Thanks for the advice again.

That I can definitely understand. But I think I will open the bottle of Crown Reserve for the occasion. Only thing is I think I will sit and drink. The last time I drank and drove, it did not turn out too good. I wrecked the father's 56 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup and he wrecked my ass!

Save the adult beverages for the victory party after the test drive is completed. If you break it out too early the job will never get done. Good Luck!
