Hey everyone. On my '84 Caprice (305, 4bbl Q-Jet, 700-R4) theres has recently been the issue of the whining sound coming through my speakers that increases intesity with engine speed while driving. (I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about) I know they sell noise filters to keep the distributor coil from causing this, and I will get one, but why did this happen all of a sudden? Why does it continue to get worse? Is something going on my ignition system? Any info would be great! Thanks!

It's not the ignition system. The noise produced by the ignition system will resemble something in between popping and a fart. The squeals are typically produced by the alternator. You can buy filters for this as well.
You could also have a failing alternator.

i agree also.ur alternator is the culprit.a noise filter will help some but i would get the alternator checked to see if its goin bad.two noise filters will help way better than one also

I think I'll just replace it to see if that helps.... I have 2 spares sitting in my garage. Thanks guys! The altenator makes a lot more sense than the ignition system. I just thought it was the ignition system because it started after I replaced my plug wires.

I'm a late reader, did the altenator change correct the whining?

Nope. I ended up getting a noise filter, and I shortened my ground wire. That fixed the problem right up.

Mine did that from the day it was new. It still does it. If you can fix it - PLEASE let me know

Noise filter helped big time, but what stopped it completely was putting in a new thicker, very short ground wire.

I'm running a 2-gauge wire (think heavy battery cable) between the radiator support and the top alternator bracket - that solved a LOT of strange electrical happenings with the car (headlights go out when you decelerate fast - that sort of thing).
