It's starting to get cold here; and I need some tips for winterizing(sp?) a '91 Escort LX 1.6L
any ideas?
Hopefully there will be a nice day soon when it's not in the lower 40s :eek7:

Check the antifreeze and make sure it is good to at least -35F. Check or change oil to 5w-20 or 30 depending on what your car takes. Synthetic would be better since it flows better when cold. Check the heat and make sure it works. New winter wiper blades, always welcome on those snowy days. Check and replace windshield washer fluid with winter formula. Don't forget he ice scraper. Make sure tires have good deep tread for snow and that they are properly aired up. Check trans fluid and make sure it is topped off. Don't know of anything else as far as the vehicle goes. You may want to get a winter survival kit for the trunk, shovel, kitty litter, extra clothes and etc. May come in handy. Good Luck!

The best protection is from a mixture of 60% antifreeze to 40% distilled water. This protects to -84 degrees. Believe it or not pure antifreeze will freeze at -9 degrees. Use distilled water. Your radiator will thank you.
I saw a Ford technical bulletin that says all Fords from 1990 on up are supposed to use SAE 5W20 motor oil. This supercedes the owner's manual. What's important here is getting oil to the overhead cam as soon as possible.
I'll be thinking about you poor guys. Here in Yuma it runs up to about 70 everyday in the Winter. :smokin:

I said 60% antifreeze protects to -84 degrees. Should be 70%. May be of interest to Canadians :iceslolan
