Help . . Problem with 84 318i

Help . . . I have a 1984 318i Automatic. The problem I am having lately is when I start it up cold. The car will start and rev high for about 10 seconds, and then the RPM steadily decreases. If I do not give it gas, the RPMs go right down and the engine stalls. Any ideas that may be wrong? Any help would be aprreciated.

Might be a timing issue. Have you given the car a tune up? What octane are you using? A little more info as to the amount of usage that you give to the car.:)

Thanks for the quick reply. As to your questions, I usually use 84 Octane I believe, at least it is the normal unleaded gas. I had a tune up about a year ago . . . probably due for another. I use the car every day but not excessively . . . for a 17 year old car, it has approxamitely 180,000 KM on it. Does this information help?

Yeah. Give the car a tune up and see if the problem persists. Also, you might want to have the timing checked, you might want to advance it a little. Using a better gas couldn't hurt either. Unfortunately, you have to go through a process of elimination till you find out exactly what was causing it. Since your car does have all that mileage, it probably wouldn't hurt to keep up with maintenance more often. If the problem persists, take it to a mechanic to have it checked out.

Let me know how it turns out.:)
