My parents are looking at a 2000 Malibu and I have a background in auto mechanics so I plan to do most of the work for them if it needs anything, and I'm wondering what you guys think about the car overall from a maintenance point of view. I took it for a test drive and it seemed pretty nice and responsive, nice tight suspension and steering, and smooth and quiet running other than the piston slap while it's warming up. Can someone tell me how reliable is the 3.1L V6 engine? Do they have any common problems to look out for, any major maintenance concerns or anything else that would make the car less desirable? After the test drive the only thing that really bugged me was the ABS but I know of other Chevy products (Cavalier) that have the same ABS system (Delco I think?). I'm more concerned about things like engine internals, valvetrain, water pump, auto transaxle and drivetrain, and anything else that's hard to get at to replace. If anyone here is a mechanic/technician or anyone else who knows their car well I would love to hear your thoughts whether good or bad. Thanks in advance :)

fuel pump every year for me, coolant leaks, transmission leaks, problem with seal that caused coolant to get into oil (had to get motor replaced, wipers go out, signal lights malfunctioned, some loud noise when hit brakes even though they've been replaced many times. check around the forum you'll see most of these are common problems amongst malibu owners.

I own a 2000 malibu w/v6 3.1 with 245,000 miles on it, I am the original owner and engine wise I have only hasd to replace the intake gasket for a coolant leak(external). Turn signals went bad but thats a recall to replace the flasher relay. The front brakes are a little loud on malibu's it helps if yu use the membrane on the back of the pad, it cuts down on the vibration transfer.
The front rotors are known for warp and I have found the cheap after market ones work the best for me and I just replace them with the pads for a cost of about $80 for the pads and rotors.
Overall I have no complaints about it, been a great car for me.
Hey I'm buying a used 98 with 142,000 miles on it and I'll have two of them.
