A helpful mechanic wanted to show me the air filter and how badly it was in need of replacement. I declined the service, thinking I could do it myself. He took his revenge by stripping the screw to the cover. Any ideas on how to get the darn thing off?

Its a metal screw holding on a plastic cover, right??
Generally you can drill off the head of a screw with a small drill bit, say a 1/8 inch.
Be careful to get the right size of bit and do not drill too far and avoid drilling into the plastic.
Once the head is drilled off, the plastic cover can be removed. There should be the top of the screw protruding about a 1/4 inch or so.
Shoot a bit of WD 40 or some other penetrating oil at the threads then you can unscrew it using some Vice Grip locking pliers.
