Incredibly frustrating camshaft seal problem

I own a 1989 metro and it had an oil leak in the timing belt area. I opted to fix my oil leak by myself. After taking everything apart, I started taking out the camshaft seal but it would just come out in pieces. After digging in a bit more, I realized it was basically glued or melted in. There is no way i can get it all off clean. The second thing I have to worry about is the new scratches i've put onto the shaft from all the gouging, which may render the new seal useless even if I can get everything out. What am I to do now, my small oil leak will now be a water faucet if I try to drive it.

Secondly, if I line the 2 sprockets up to the correct lines, will the timing belt be set correctly? I noticed they were not quite right when I took them apart. I bought this car recently and have been having lots of problems with it.

Tough break. Well the camshaft can be changed out fairly easily. Perhaps you can get a good camshaft from a wrecker. If you had removed the valve cover and removed the #1 camshaft bearing cap you could have easily removed the old seal.

I'm going to the breaker tomorrow looking for a tachometer, perhaps I can price you a cam too.

Could you elaborate on this please? I need to do mine soon and anything to make the job easier is a good thing!

you take the valve cover off and the cam gear. on the gear end of engine will be a bearing cap with 2 bolts, if you take that off the seal is under it
