Low gas milage after replacing fuel filter

Hi all,
I recently replaced the fuel filter. There is nothing wrong, just that it has been there for ten years and I thought it might be better to get a new one. However, after replacing it, my gas milage dropped dramatically (from ave 40mpg to around 32mpg). Is this the problem of the fuel filter (it is the wright size), or my installation (all gaskets were replaced too)? Any idea how to trace down the problem? Also the car feels like it is with less power now.
Thank you,

did you install the filter in the right direction? It's an easy mistake to make even by professionals.

There are several features to prevent me from installing it the wrong way (The little piece of metal to support the income hose, etc). So I am pretty positive that it was in the right direction.

Personally, I do not think the filter and the bad gas mileage are related, unless something, like the oxygen sensor was knocked loose.
What is the make model and year of car?
I suspect if the car is 10+ years old there may be other maitenance issues that would affect fuel mileage, such as the O2 sensor (recommended replacement is every 50K miles or so), and a tune up; new plugs, plug wires, air filter etc.

It's a Honda Civic 95 LX. Is there an easy way to test if O2 sensor is out?
Thanks,

You are right MagicRat. The fuel filter was fine.
I just noticed the spark plugs are very loose (just replaced them this summer). Now that I have tightened them and the lost horse power has been restored. As for gas milage, I will have to wait for the next couple refills...
