Bad Idle... Idle Motor?

Hey all;
My idle has been sucking balls lately. It takes about 4 times of cranking before it stops from dying when the car is cold. In the morning, turn on, shuts off. Over and over until it gets slightly warm. Kinda sucks.
So I was coming home from work just now (same problem), and I realized it might be the little motor that controls the idle. I forget the name :loser: . The idle has also bee bad when driving too. For example, the other day, when pulling up to a light in neutral, the idle was at 1500rpm until I came to a complete stop, then dropped down to normal. It's been doing it alot, so I think the motor is to blame.
Am I right, or crazy :screwy: . If I am, how much am I looking at here? Thanks

As long as you give it some gas when its cold it will stay running?

fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator maybe?? not wuite sure.

Yeah, it will stay running. Only thing is though, I have to wait for the idle to go up.
When I start the car, it will either jsut die right away, or have very low rpm, at about 200-300rpm. If I give it some gas then, it'll die. The car sounds like it's choking. When the rpm then shoots up, I can give it gas, and usually just hold it there for 30 seconds.

Well david-b, actually the cleaning of the throttle body might be the problem! I know that sounds really weird, but after reading your previous post of cleaning out the throttle body, I cleaned mine the next day, and from now on, my car will idle great at start-up, but after a few miles of driving it will idle at 1500 and even 2000 RPM sometimes!
What went wrong??

Mine doesn't start up perfect though. And my idle drops to normal then when driving. Just takes awhile. It doesn't stay up there.

Well, I doubt that this is the problem, but just double-check that the throttle body position sensor is all the way clipped in...If it is not that will cause the car to die..forgot to plud mine in once (when experimenting) car died right away!
Hey who knows!!
Good luck!

It wouldn't work at all then. I had the same problem, (the bad starts) last winter too. This year it's worse though. It took many times to turn it over. The battery was jsut replaced the other day too with a Die Hard Weather something or other. Most cranking power you can get from a Die Hard for that car. So that's not the problem.
Anyone know how much a idle motor costs? I'm thinking of jsut giving that a try. I remember seeing somewhere that someone else had a problem similar to this and they replaced it, and it worked fine then.

I bought the idle air control motor. With tax was like $54. I got to take it back. The actual part that moves was too short. I installed it (just to see), and idle sat at 4000rpm. Took it out and about to take it back. Oh well. Don't know what the deal is with that. So part 21985 from Borg Warner will not fit. Remember that for future references.

david-b...if that idle air control sensor doesn't fix the problem, check and make sure that when you put your throttle body back on that you set the throttle cable back up correctly too. i had an idle problem with one of my motors and it ended up being the throttle cable wasn't adjusted right. let us know how that IAC sensor works.

Throttle Cable is fine. Took the whole TB apart again today when installing the new IAC motor that wasnt the right size. Everything there is fine. Check all of that already.

if you have a chiltons book or something of that nature look up the fast air idle valve.thats why it wont start when its cold.or go to vfaq.com and look under engine then idle surge and read about it there
