how to fix my wiring harness?

I have ford contour 95, 2,5 liter, 6 V, which has problems with the engine wiring harness , I just got a used one, not in great shape but some wires need to be fixed . I just pretend to tape them or cut and put a new wire where it is required. Do you know what kind of wires are appropiate?
Home (probably not), speakers( look similar), primary wiring package for ford ( maybe?) ,I found them in Lowes and Autozone and according the vendors they are not appropiate for cars? I dont believe they know for sure anyway, I havent ask an electrician yet , i will do for sure but maybe somebody knows what kind of wire I need? where to find them?

During My brief Web research I assume they are 16" gauge most of them, and with dirent colors combinations red with black strip, etc,and also some 18" gauge(thinner) . So my question again: What kind of wires are appropiate, and where to buy them?
thank-you
franz

Id probably get some from radio shack or home depot/lowes. I think the main concern is the wire insulation. Thats why there is a recall on the wiring harnesses to begin with is because the insulation cracks over time due to underhood temperatures. Wire is wire for the most part. I dont think I would get speaker wire, but I would just get some regular 16 gauge.

I've read Ford has a 10 year warranty on 95-96 wiring harnesses. They were vastly changed in 1998. Find out if this is true.

The wiring harness recall is in effect for 95-97 Contour/Mystiques. It has a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. Once one of those is exceeded on the vehicle, it cannot be fixed under recall.

As usual, information about this is posted on contour.org.

I wish I had gotten this done, But.. I haven't had any problems with mine at all. But now that I said I haven't I probably will.

i just got done rewiring a contour myself and i went to my local auto parts store and told them what i was doing and they were able to supply me with wiring designed to withstand high temps. and so far i havent had any problems, and your going to need 16, 18, and some 10 gauge wire if your rewiring is as extensive as mine was. AND as far as the recall/warentee extension from what i have read and learned it was a warentee extension but if im wrong im sorry but then so are about 10 different internet sources. That and if it was a true recall ford would be required to replace it regardless of mileage and year of the car. hope this helps and if you want any more information on what i had to do on my wiring just ask me.
