87 ranger no heat

I have heat going down the highway, but none at the next light. Already replaced thermostat and made sure it was full of coolant. I believe the temperature door is manual, so I don't think that it's being closed. Totally perplexed on this issue. Has there ever been a problem with waterpumps on the 2.3 model?
