81 corolla starter

I am looking for any advice on the starter on my 81 corolla. In the design on my year the starter is next to the exhaust manifold and my starters keep blowing. My machanic has tried all sorts of stuff, such as rigging up an addtional heat shield, and has installed every different starter he can try. Nothing seems to make a difference though. This is apparently a problem with the 81 corolla. I was wondering if anyone had any advice, tips, or anything I can try. Thanks!
