Help wanted for first car!!

I am currently thinking about what car to get as my first car. I had in mind of getting a saxo but my other half was not happy about that as he seems to think all they ever do is break down and they are not reliable cars, he has suggested that i get a volkswagen polo but i need to think about the money as they dont come cheep! so im asking for some advice on both cars and what people think of them. :1zhelp:
