hhm...interesting 420a swap thought

first of all i'm not a newbie so don't even start on that...but since everyone's always asking "what can you swap in besides just another 420a" and 99% of them want to put in a 4g63 engine, but that is 180 degrees off from the stock one, BUT THEN.........

there's the Evo engine. and that one is 180 degrees off of the turbo, which would make it the same setup as the 420a (motor on passenger side, tranny on driver side). i was looking at some pictures and some of the engine bay is actually similar, not exact, but similar. i wonder if this wouldn't be a more feasable project than a stock 4g63. i might just have a new summer project being as my RS needs a new engine bay (thanks to a fucking fire) and have to put the talon on hold for awhile.

That's an interesting thought...

post up some pictures! i want to see... the only thing i could think of by getting more HP out of our 420a motor is to get a 2.2 stroker kit at www.howellautomotive.com.

well, you still have the problems in that there's no mounts for that engine for the NA subframe, the axles won't fit, there's no 2WD trans that I know of that will bolt to an evo engine (maybe a 3G GS or 2G Spyder trans), and all the wiring.

dude... thats why you have to reweld and cut to make your own custom engine mounts and use all the trannys and axles from that evo to make it work. Well at least from what i know that is what all civics have do when they are installing a 2.2vtec into their little enginebay. So motor, tranny, axles, and front suspensions. How do i know!? lets just say.. Got Jack'd!? Lol but seriously you will need all the front suspensions and tranny axles... which can cost a fortune... but if your rich... hook me up too man!!!!

actually the engine mount on the passenger side is almost exactly like the one in the 420a and the tranny mounts are in somewhat the same position too, maybe not exact but you could fab up something of your own to make it work. couldn't you just run the tranny as a 2wd instead of a awd? and i have to replace ALL my engine wiring anyways so that's not an issue. but it was just a thought, i just figured i'd see what people at my second house thought.

there aren't really any pictures to post...it's just the thought that the engines are setup the same way.

Wow, you are right. That thought never crossed my mind that both of the motors are positioned the same way. I'd say go for it if you can get the evo motor!

I bet an EVO engine will cost a shit load, but an excellent idea. I suppose you could just not put the transfer case and back stuff on, but that would be kinda ghetto rigged. You could just convert it to awd, but that wouldnt exactly be easy.

thats just too much money.... but if you really love your 2g then you'll be the first. F* everyone else... GO FOR IT!

well i found an evo motor, tranny, and wiring harness on ebay for like $1000, but then again ebay is kinda sketchy sometimes. i'm gonna look into it a little more. but come this summer yall might be seeing an rs with an evo VIII motor.

Ok, so its been like.....forever since I have visited, but I am happy to see an idea like that when I get back. If you want to go for it, forget what everyone else says. It would be the first time Ive seen it. If it all works out, let us know how you did it, and post some pics!!! :grinyes:

i think this summer i'm either going to swap in a 4g63 or evo VII just because i can. i'll definitely have a write-up and pics if i get it accomplished. maybe even a small video or something. i like doing rare things like this so this might just be my calling.

you could be waiting quite awhile...but who knows, maybe i'll have enough ambition to start it this x-mas too.

Why would you set it up as FWD? You coul just swap the rear suspension too. I mean if you're going through so much work it would probably pay off to do someting like that. I know you can get the driveshaft shortened/extended if needed.

it was just an idea. it's not like it's set in stone. i don't even have the parts yet, none the less the ambition to do it all, everyone needs to just remember it's an IDEA.

my friend and I are doing this exact thing. Just to let you know he spent 4600 from a reputable source for the motor, transmission, wiring harness, and ecu. we found some axles on evolutionm.net for 300 and spent 100 something for a new drivers side motor mount.
not to mention he bought a talon tsi to strip for the awd components.
Axles should be here next week and then the fun will begin.

$4600 is a bit on the high side, but you should definitely post up when you're finished, I'd like to see if this is actually somewhat feasable.

Ohhhh, I thought it was DSM motor... I was like jesus, $5000 for all the parts? Coulda bought a damn good car for that! I see now, yeah, that will be a cool project and I am definately interested in seeing how it comes out.

I challenge anyone to find an evolution 7/8/9 motor complete with wiring trans & ecu for a significantly cheaper price. ebay or private seller aside.

and as for why? Because modified eclipses are a dime a dozen. Just about everything under the sun has been done to them and he wants something that sets him apart, and he simply has and is willing to spend the money.

How cheap is consider, is cheap price to you ?

Your going to run into a big problem with the transmission, you can not run an AWD tranny as FWD for very long without ruining the transmission. Just some FYI. So with that said you pretty much will have to do an AWD setup. Cool project though, make sure you do a LOT of research before you start though.

Uh.....

Yeah, but the talons Transmission wont bolt up to the EVO block as far as I know, there are differences in the bolt patterns. Its gonna take a lot of custom modding, thats why not a lot of people have done this already.

Oh, I see now. I was assuming you were going to try to use the whole talon tranny, I guess you'll only be using the drive shaft and rear end though. Makes more sense to me now, sorry about the confusion.

Sounds interesting! Can't wait to see the outcome. I read in Turbo Magazine a while back in the "readers rides" section (I think), that someone put an Evo 8 motor in a 3g lol.

I'm definately interested in seeing more of this. Monicle, once you guys start working on this you should start a new thread and document the build with pictures and allt hat jazz.

Yeah we defanitely will. theres alot of people out there interested in it. If it was done already like the previous guy said id like to see that magazine. Might save us some down time during the build.

It wasn't a big article, just like 2 paragraphs and didn't really go into much detail on the actual swap.
