1.6L SOHC potential?

What is the potential of the stock engine in an ek hachback? Can it's performance be significantly improved, and would it even be worth it? What are some of the engines limitations compared to other honda motors like a VTEC motor?

edit: D15B is the motor that im talking about. maybe i should have just said that in the first place...

yeah, swap the head for a jdm d15b6 head, you can bore the pistons out to 1.6l, use zc pistons and rods, or if you wanna spend a little more get titanium or forged pistons... piston rings, valve springs and retainers.. while your head is off, port and pollish it, titanium valves too... you can use a forged head gasket and head studs-this will all help your motor handle more boost...

piece a 14b turbo together, you can run safely push 10 lbs on the street and about 15 lbs on the track..and if you wanna go faster than that (low 14's in the 1/4) retard your timing 2.5 degrees and throw in a 50shot wet NOS kit... you'll be in the 12's

Actually, the stock D15 is not the greatest motor to start with. If you want to use the D series motors, just grab the 1.6 EX, and you can mod from there. Back in the day, the D15 was alright, but now the 1.6 so far surpasses it, it isn't even funny.

I would reccommend using titanium valves, but not titanium or aluminum rods, or titanium pistons. Reason being, titanium rods like to grab onto other metals, and tend to scar the bearing journals, leading to early failure. In a straight race car, go for it, the weight you can afford to lose would make up for the fact you change them out after every few races anyway. But, since your not using the motor for straight race, there are some things you need to consider.

First off, Watch out how far you "port and polish" the head, of any civic motor for that matter. If you plan to go all motor, concentrate on the exhaust side, and give that a good working, but the intake side, just very mild, enough to smooth it out, not hog it out. Less of course, you want to lose all possiblility of bottom-end power. The Stock configuration of the 1.6 sohc vtec is exceptional, far better than it is given credit. The block design and head design are of "F1 race quality". You need only upgrade the bottom end to anything IF....you plan on runnin more than 50% of the engines stock rated hp, or about 17-19 lbs. of boost.

As far as turbo setups go, it is a great idea to run on that specific motor, and up to 12-14 lbs, you will be pushing it pretty hard, but with care, and proper tuning, would be a very good motor. Also with little out of pocket.

As far as modding the sohc motors, there are a few things i recommend for ya..

1. unshroud the valves--create a circular area around the valves for better flow and combustion
2. Extrude hone the intake manifold--This will up your air flow, and jump up the hp a bit--keep the stock manifold if at all possible, it is exceptionally designed for that specific head setup and motor configuration for a reason.-do this whether or not you turbo the motor.
3. If you plan to push more than 50% of the motors stock rated hp (with or without nos). then you MUST sleeve the block, or disasterous results will happen. Use your imagination. the cylinders are "floating" in the block, unlike the newer B series motors, they are a big weakness when upgrading the sohc motors.

Just make sure you get all the specs on the motors you plan on building, and have fun with it.
