setting engine idle and timing question

I went to set the idle (so I could check the timing) on 1989 Trooper 4 cylinder with injection. The Haynes manual says to disconnect the pressure regulator VSV wire prior to doing so. I looked under the hood and there is only the female end coming from the wiring loom. I cannot find the other end. Does anyone know if this was an option or if there should be another end and someone has "altered" the wiring? The manual does not detail nor discuss this wire/feature beyond the disconnecting prior to setting the idle. Since the idle effects the timing, I am activly seeking an answer asap please.
Thanks,
Paul
