hey folks!

my 84 300d is making LOUD clunk-knock-thud noises from the rear driver side. It is consistant with wheel speed. It only does this about 50% of the time while driving(comes and goes) . From the sound of it, it seems like it should be something obvious to diagnose. I checked the CV boots for tears, ive wiggled the rear wheels to check for bearing play, checked muffler for any rattling, checked drive shaft for play, even took it to a reputable shop and after they charged me 130$ for rear sway bar links it still makes the same noises. F@#$!!!! Anyone have any ideas? please help! I am at a total loss!

Sounds like a flex disk. Mostly the front goes bad but check both.

You will need to put it on a lift, grab the driveshaft and twist it and watch each disk. If there is a lot of play within the disk it needs replacement. Even if you see no play but see a lot of cracks, replace it/or them.

My 80 240D did the same thing on the rear passenger side. It ended up being a broken axle.

Hey folks -

Thanks for the potential fixes. Just wondering about behavior clues. My fiancee's 83 300D is fine around town, but this knock-knock-knock consistently appears about 100 miles or so into a long journey. Of course, when we bring it in to a mechanic, they can't reproduce and send us on our way.

Did either of yours appear only after a certain amount of time/distance, or was it consistent. I'm trying to narrow this down so I can tell the shop what needs to be done.

Thanks -

s.
