Hyundai stiffs you on the warranty.

I recently purchased a Tuscon and was promissed all sorts of warranty coverage by the dealership and really made to feel comfortable and secure. But, when the first sign of trouble crept up, the people in the parts and services sector of Hyundai did not back up the sales floor promisses.

I woke the other morning and found that the back glass on my vehicle had shattered in the night. At first I considered vandalism, but I live in a neighborhood of five acre properties and a vandal would have to drive ten miles out of town, turn and drive another 1/2 mile, turn again for another quarter mile, then turn once more, drive past a large property with cars parked near the road to find my driveway, which is masked by pine trees, and destroy just one window in my Tuscon, leaving the other two vehicles parked nearby untouched. Furthermore, there was no evidence of an exterior force breaking the glass so I figured it must have been a manufacturing flaw in the glass. The weather had recently turned cold and the car was so far, untested in the lower temperatures.

The dealership was great about getting me a loner vehicle, but the parts department claimed that such a breakage was completely impossible and their district rep told them not to fix it under the warranty because he felt that the damage was something other than a defect.

I've owned the vehicle for 5 months. Even after arguing with the district rep for 30 minutes on the phone countering every point he made and leaving him stumped on a few of the arguments I made he still refused to change his mind. Even when I passed along the opinions of all the auto glass repair places I called that day. Each one of them stating in simple terms: That Happens. Sometimes glass just breaks. He said the scrutiny that the corporate office would give him over approving a claim for shattered glass just wasn't worth it.

Never have I been treated so poorly. NEVER BUY HYUNDAI! Their warranty is worthless and their promises are empty.

Used to buy Oldsmobiles when they were around. Was in the service department one day, they were replacing a windshield in a Cutlass. Looked ok to me so I asked the guys what was wrong. They showed me scratches in the glass where the wipers run. Said the car was clean, low mileage and local owned so they put a new glass in under warranty. Said they please the customer, whatever it takes. Different world today.

First thing is did you get your warranty promises in writing?
You will find that the sales department makes all kinds of promises to get you in the car.
Then when you try to get those promises met, the service department looks like the bad guy.
This happens all the time.
As far as your glass goes, this is a questionable item under warranty.
The reason is there are many things that can cause glass damage other than a factory defect. Especially when the glass is shattered.
tom3's example is an obvious warranty concern because the glass was damaged by the wipers.

That sucks, but how do you know that it wasn't just some kid running around at night with a hammer or something???

Rear windows shattering in cold temperatures for no apparent reason has been known to happen. Its been documented on many different makes and models.

So basically, the district rep is a shmuck and should at least acknoledge that you are not a liar.

Oh ok...I never knew that was something that could just happen often enough to be documented.

glass has been known to break during weather changes. but in my experience rear glass breaking without reason is usually caused by a rear defogger not cutting off automatically.

I'm in the glass industry. Spontaneous - without apparent cause - faliure of tempered glass is a rare, but a REGULAR occurrence. Ths suspected cause is a non-apparent chip on the edge of the glass caused by mishandling at any point between removal from the tempering oven to the final installation. The chip weakens the surface tension of the glass, and the car vibrations will contribute to the eventual spontaneos failure of the unit.
