420 help

Hey guys, i searched and nothing came up about my problem... i have the dumbest car possible! it's a 95 eclipse, turbo 420.

anyways... i keep getting this stupid lag when i start to accelerate. it almost like a sputtering, kinda hard to say.....pretty much it feels like when i floor it, it doesn't respond very well at first the turbo doesn't spool up but it's like the spark hits before the gas sprays or vise versa?? then it is like bam, it works great! only if i mat the car all the time?? and when i'm driving and i am in 5th and around 2 G for rpms it's like the car jerks forward then not...then forward then not..... my car was working great for the longest time and then this started to happen for around 2 months or so??? the car doesn't keep a steady idle it is missing but i changed the plugs with NGK and the wires seem to be fine? if the coil pack goes does it display the check engine? but when i change the plugs the car is great for the day, then it goes back to being dumb!!

please help!

thanks

Mike

Sounds like it needs tuned... It is probably running too rich and fouling out the plugs. What kind of fuel management are you running on it?

I second this diagnosis.

Well we installed the 4g63 injectors and the pump. i'm only running around 5-6 pounds of boost, when i changed the plugs before i never noticed that the plugs were carbond up = running rich. also my air fuel guage well like usual only hits the rich side when it is matted. i noticed that the one wire when i was under the car tonight on the exhaust sensor was seperated... i still get a reading though for my air fuel, but would this maybe have something to do with this??? regardless i need to change it anyways.

thanks for the reply guys

Mine does the same thing! It had no problems before I put on the turbo, but now it's like it only likes high rpms. Same EXACT problem. We just started looking for the culprit. We had assumed it was the regulater running to rich. Although when we set up the car it was at 45psi at idle and then 85psi at full boost. I was thinking that since this problem developed a few weeks after we put on the turbo, that the crappy cartech regulater was advancing itself. But you say you have no evidence of running rich?? We are still going to readjust the regulator this weekend, but if you find out anymore info let me know. I'll do the same if I find anything this weekend.

I hope this was a typo. :uhoh:

Please tell me you arn't actually serious about that.

Will do, i was told that maybe the mass air sensor (somebody told me this) just because there is more air coming into the engine now that i will have some problems? or the IAC? it's like if i adjust the throttle to rev at 1100 rpm's then i wouldn't have such a dumb POS sounding car. it's embarrassing when you are stopped at a set of lights and your car is sputtering at idle and when you go to take off it stumbles like i have all the wires crossed? stupid car! i should just burn it! :sly:

but to answer you, yes if i find anything out with my car i will let you know asap!

thanks for the help guys.

sorry just another thing, i was re-reading what you said, are you really running a turbo on a bone stock 420? you didn't change any internals, no fuel pump, injerctors.....anything?

You do not need to change anything. You can run a hahn stage 1 kit without rebuilding anything, but you can only run like 5 psi safely

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they need like an AFC or a GM MAF Translator or something to adjust their fuel? That would be my guess as to why they are all running rich. You can't just throw bigger injectors and a pump in there without something to manage how much fuel it gives the cylinders. Also, their engines have no way of reading boost without an aftermarket ECU or something... Right?

you could be right, quite frankly i think i should just pump up the boost and bagg the shit out of it till she blows! then leave it somewhere for somebody to take all my shit out of the car and maybe the insurance would write it off! hahahaha thats just how much it is pissing me off right now! the thing doesn't run right and come to think of it it never ran like this before this stupid chick comes barrelling out of a parking lot and not looking both ways and "T" bones my damn car. insurance never wrote it off, and this making my car not worth much and a POS
*somebody do me a favor and come steal it or something* :banghead:

Well, I do have the 255lph pump and the fuel regulator. And it was a typo with the psi thing. I'm actually running 55psi at idle and 85psi of fuel at 5psi boost. I also have the little black box that came with the Hahn kit hooked up to my MAP. I was looking through Hahn's directions and I realized I never regaped the plugs to .035. They say that this is the correct gap for up to 10psi. What gap are you kids out there running?

And we 420A guys don't have a MAF right? It's speed density. Could that sensor maybe be causing the problem?

I'm not sure about the 420a's but I do know that in theory you need some type of ECU to read boost... Oh yeah, 85psi seems awfully high for only running 5psi of boost... I'm thinking you should crank it (your fuel pressure) down to about 35psi at idle and 55psi at full boost... Thats about what we run at for our 4g63 engines... At least, thats what most people around here run them at.

do you mean the O2 sensor? if so, that might have something to do with your shitty idle.
