PHILADELPHIA — A kindergarten teacher found eight bags of heroin in a 5-year-old student's pocket, Philadelphia police said.

The matter was under investigation and the boy's mother could be charged, police Inspector William Colarulo said.

The heroin was discovered Oct. 25. On Tuesday, the school sent a letter home to parents. The letter did not explain why the school waited three weeks to tell parents. It was sent home after a story about the incident aired on WCAU-TV.

Neither the child nor his classmates at Richmond Elementary School were harmed, a schools spokesman said.

"We are shocked and saddened, outraged" that a parent or parents could place a child in such danger, said spokesman Fernando Galliard.

The boy and his three siblings have been turned over to the city's Department of Human Services and placed in temporary custody, spokesman Ted Qualli said. The agency was looking for relatives who could eventually take care of the children.

yea, but cant you be killed by ODing if you swallow it, i dont know how much was in one of those bags but a 5-year old, if he swallowed 8 bags worth he'd be dead for sure, it gets into the bloodstream eventually.

I think if a 5 yr old did just about 8 bags of anything he would almost be dead.

C'mon, Oz. Really. I'm all for adults to carry on as they choose to, but we have a duty to protect those that are too young to protect themselves.

First, if the parents are heroin addicts, they may not have been thinking at all. Second, the kid probably just found the bags, or perhaps some adult asked them to carry them around. I've seen kids try to eat the darndest things, and making a "protein shake" out of the heroin isn't outside the realm of possibility.

just like everyone said, who would suspect a 5 yr old of having heroin...obviously this was a lot and the parents were prolly concerned about the cops or someone else breaking into their house or searching it and then confiscating it. so my guess is that they were "keeping it safe" on the child

I figure they probably held onto it for a few weeks and probably had it tested, then once it was confirmed as heroin, gave it to police.

Yes Im sure Toksin... yess... the pre school themselves had the heroin tested by their own drug chemical testing laboratory before notifying the police. They had the 1st graders do some tests on it to verify that it was in fact the illegal substance heroin. Once the previous year's kindergarten class validictorian presented the administration with the scientific proof that it was heroin (3 weeks later); they sprung into action making sure to waste no time.

I said had it tested. There's laboratories that do independent testing of any sort of substance. I did NOT say they tested it themselves. You really assume that I'd think a kindergarten would do it's own drug testing?

now this kid was found with heroin right? (wrong Hogie, the teachers framed him for it:rolleyes:) so i mean automatically they were gonna test it at a laboratory, unless the kids in that area are smart as hell and know how to do it themselves....if that's the case i might as well drop out of school and stay at the supermarket, because they're definately gonna steal my job later....

all of this makes me wonder about the next generation, because already i see today's children going down the toilet....pussy ass parents who are too weak to discipline their children, and the kids are ending up growing up without discipline and self respect. I work across from the high school and everyday i hear of kids running away from the cops/being arrested/committing crimes/getting pregnant....it's a plague and it starts at home.....i just wish that if people made the decision to become parents, they would actually raise kids who would grow up to be benefactors, rather than social waste......

My kindergarten did their own drug testing, it was all done on me..they did all sorts of testing...all...sorts...
