Fuse keeps blowing

2000GT 48000 miles. A couple of weeks ago the fuse that controls dashboard illumination and taillights blew. I changed the fuse and everything was OK for a few days but then it blew again. I have replaced it 4 times in a couple week period. It does not blow out while driving..... it always happens when I stop and shift the car into park.

I'm wondering if this could be related to a past problem that disappeared on it's own. For a while I had a problem with the shifter getting stuck in park and the key getting stuck in the ignition. This was an intermittant problem and when I talked to the service mgr at the dealer I was told that if the problem was not occuring when I brought it in that it would be tough to zero in on the problem. The electrical specialist, after doing a computer analysis, said that he was pretty sure that it was a bad ignition switch. I figured I'd wait till the problem was pretty constant so that the symptoms would be there when taken in for service. Lo and behold, it cleared up on it's own and so it was never serviced for this problem.

Even though the problem cleared itself, the lights on the dash
sometimes go out, or flicker off and back on, when I shift the car into park.

Could the blown fuse problem be related to the former problem......could a bad ignition switch cause the fuse to blow? If not, does anyone have any ideas on the cause?

It would be helpful if you could list the year, engine size, mileage and model Grand Prix.

I would bet you own a 97,98 or 99 GP.

I doubt that your first problem is related to your second problem. An ignition fault would cause a loss of power causing dim lights, or flickering lights and not a blown fuse.

You have a short in the system. If it was the ignition switch you would blow the fuse before the ignition switch and not just the tail light fuse. Since it only happens when you shift into reverse I would look at the reverse light, making sure the bulbs are correct and that the wiring going to the lights isn't pinched causing your short.
