Heater Problems(wierd clicking noise)

Hello , I'm having problems with my heater. Well for one thing it blows cool air when i turn the climate control to any part of the red, and on some parts on the blue it makes a clicking noise; It never stops until I put it in on the blue towards the middle. When i turn on the vent or use the floor it gets warmish , but more towards the cool side :( and if i put it on any of the other settings like defrost its just cold air. Do anyone have any help or any questions on what it might be.. Some people say it may be the blend door , and i dont want to pay that much money ($700 to $800) do anyone have any other solutions or any knowledge of what this problem may be or if it can be anything else.. Oh Yes I'm in Illinois and it's COLD (Winter months) Thanks for Replying and GOD bless you :)

I just posted about a similar heating problem on someone's '99. I have a '97 that had heating problems. The clicking you describe is PROBABLY coming from the actuator ($45) bolted to the air box under the dash. On my car, when I turned the heat to a particular spot on the dial, there would be a repeated thumping noise - like the door was opening and then falling back down. I pulled the actuator out and propped up the door manually to the heat position by inserting a 1" square thin piece of plastic sideways into the metal "banana" bracket that moves the door on the face of the air box (under the dash). Push the bracket all the way up, then insert the piece of plastic to keep it in this position. I'm pretty sure I need to replace my actuator, but I haven't definitively proven this yet. In the meantime, I've backflushed my heater core (see my other post) and with the door propped up, I have plenty of heat.

Agree with Colt Hero. The blend door control actuator has plastic gears inside that move the door linkage. Probably one of the gears have stripped the teeth. If you can find a junk one, you can open the case and swap the broken gear for a good one. Just did this Monday on a 97 Taurus. Luckily we are a fleet and have plenty of wrecks to choose from.
