I have a 91 s10 (4.3). I was wondering what would be the advantages of buying dual exhaust. Also, what are some other ways of giving it a little more power(speed) without me needing to rip the whole damn engine out. Oh and what the hell would a bigger cam do for it and is it recommended. Your guys' expertise would be greatly appreciated.

They won't let you do dual exhaust. You have to get another converter and the whole bit. I asked one of the guys at AA Speed and Custom, and he told me its illegal for him to do that, forgot the reason why. You can do a split pipe from the converter you have on there already. Honestly its hardly going to make a difference. You won't feel anything until maybe you hit 50 mph and you feel a SLIGHT difference. It will sound a lot tougher however.

lol you don't want to rip the engine out yet you want to put a camshaft in? Damn, good luck. A new camshaft would be recommended for anyone who wants to make their vehicle faster. I don't think its legal if your trying to run in the brackets however. Ask around, there are many different types of camshafts, some aren't street legal. I think the highest is a street racing cam before you start getting into the illegal stuff.

Ok so I can not legally run two completely seperate pipes(cats)? Ucked fup. Would it have anything to do with emissions testing? So what about things like headers, manifolds, and throttle body. I have heard upgrading them can throw in a few extra horsepower. Where can I learn about what I need or what I do not(economically efficient)? Oh and thanks for helping me not waste money.

Yeah its probably because of the emissions test I can't remember though. The rest you listed is fine. Headers again won't do you much without a full breathing exhaust. If you want you could go with the whole exhaust thing first, thats what usually everyone does. It's not the road I'll be taking however.

If you want to know what I'm doing to my S-10 for some quick power I'll list a few things I plan on in the future.

First I already have the exhaust done so scratch that out.
From there I'll be putting on a supercharger, maybe a Powerdyne maybe not, I haven't shopped around yet. Thats a good 40 to 100 horsepower right there.
Then I'm planning on buying a shift kit, then a street racing camshaft, then headers.
Once I have well over 200 horsepower(maybe even in the 300's), I'll probably switch the gears to a 4.10 for the time being. Gear ratios, which involve rack and pinion gears, are another way to make your vehicle fast and shift quick. This doesn't give you any horsepower, and as a matter of fact it takes away from your top speed. So if you want to mess with Rack and Pinion, I'd suggest getting some more power first.

This is only a small amount of things that can be done though. I'll take it further but that only depends on how much money I have at the time. You gotta realize as well by the time your satisfied with everything you've done to your vehicle, you will have spent a big chunk of money that could of been invested elsewhere. You'll find yourself getting carried away and when you blow an engine, it's going to burn another hole in your pocket. If your dead into this, great go for it. But think about that first before you do anything.

As for me, I'm set on just trying to get this to break into 13's or 12's. I think once it reaches that far I'll stop.

nice. I always think its nice to have a small truck with a little kick in it. Having a truck always seems to throw people off about speed. I think that is the road I may go down with some flomasters then headers. Where are you from, (I think a guy near me says he can put two cats and separate pipes). what do you think about rear end differential ratios. Maybe a rear end out of a 2.8L. You sound like you know what youre talking about. lots of luck on the Xtreem

well I put duals with a rhino and 3 inch tips on. I can definetly feel a difference. Especially between 35-50 it seems to have lost that little lope. I doubt I am going to add any more to this engine considering it has 160,000+. It still runs fast as hell but I think I will just wait until I blow the MFer up then look for a 305. All you need to change, I guess is the oil pan and motor mounts to make it fit. Thanks for your help I will let you know if I fill that bitch with a v8.

if your willing to do a new cam, your more then half way to a new moter, new cams are nice, say in an lt1 or lt4, not the 4.3, the 4.3 packs a kick as it is stock, if you want more, your not going to notice much with all the money you would put into heads and duel exhaust, in michigan (where im from) you could just rip the cat off and run 2 smller duel pipes withiout a problem and trust me it sounds good

Like he said...don't do this. Stick with a well-made cat back system like a Gibson or go cheapie at a local muffler shop: get your fav hi-flo muff and have the shop bend up some larger diameter pipe to replace the stock for more flow. Get a hi-flo cat if your want and quit while you're ahead. Wanna dual "look"; getta catback kit with dual rear outlets or have the muff shop do it. Put a true dual exhaust system on it and your gonna have to wire up a second O2 sensor with the second cat if you don't wanna send the ECM computer into wierdsville. To do it right, and ensure equal flow from both sides, you'd have to replace the existing cat with whatever you put on the new side. In the end, you can spend a boat loada moolah putting on a true dual exhaust and end up with a truck that runs like crap. Not to mention any emissions laws you might have to deal with.....

Want even better exhaust flow and an even tinner wallet?.....replace the cast iron "log headers" and slip on a set of JBA "shorty" headers.

You gotta computer controlled, fuel injected engine (throttle body?) and it is designed to operate most efficiently with a stock-like exhaust setup (single exhaust). With computer controlled fuel injection it's easy to make improvements to intake and exhaust flow and have the computer make the needed fuel mixture changes. Back in the carb days, any improvement in overall air flow through the engine meant time spent tweaking the jetting of the carb to adjust for, and take advantage of, the increased airflow. Today the computer does it..... well, up to a point. You can actually improve the flow (intake and exhaust) such that it will exceed the computers ability to make the required fuel mixture enrichment..... then you run lean, don't make all the power you shelled out the big bucks for and the engine runs hot.....

Got a TBI? Check out Turbo City (www.turbocity.com): they are the GM TBI gurus. They have stuff so you can get the stock TBI to really perform.

"Performance" chip? Bag it...they only work at wide open throttle settings where the Feds let emissions requirements slip a bit. Under normal driving they have to meet the same EPA emissions requirements as the stock chip. Buy a 160 deg thermostat and enjoy most of the effects for a whole lot cheaper.

Clean up the intake track: these trucks have a variety of intake "mufflers" all designed to reduce intake roar....the effect on your motor is like trying to breath potato stuffed up your nose. Look yours over and see what is making it harder for the engine to breath...simply remove it. Best of all...it's FREE! From the "oldies but goodies": look at your air cleaner you may be able to flip it (unscrew the whing nut, remove air cleaner cover and flip it upsidedown... reinstall). This will create a poor mans 360 deg intake but.... you'll be sucking in all that hot underhood air, but.... it does sound cool.

Oh yeah.... try doing a good old fashioned tune up.... plugs, wires, cap rotor.... check the timing, set it to factory specs and don't screw with it; the computer controls it but it *must* have a solid basic setting to work from; in computer lingo "garbage in. garbage out".

Bottom line, it'll take *a lot* of money to turn this taxi-cab motor into a screamer.... Heck, you could probably swap a late model 4.3 out of a hi-zoot "Cyclone" optioned truck (or whatever it was called with the HiPo 4.3L) and be money ahead bsed on what your talking about doing here.
