Check engine light... trouble code

We took our 2001 Rodeo to AutoZone today so they could check out our "check engine light" and tell us what the problem is. They found the following:

My wife took the truck there and she said the guy didn't act like he knew how to use the machine so the following info is all that I have

P0456 - small leak

P0300- random multiple cylinder misfires

P0401- Insufficient flow in the EGR system

P0442- small leak exists in the evaporative emission control system

P0463- the voltage signal from the fuel level sensor is too high for the current engine operating conditions

In the past few months I've fixed a few things. One being the fuel sending unit (as per instructions I found on this board) and the other was the intermittent wipers (replaced a relay as per the instructions I found on this board). Not sure if those 2 fixes have anything to do with the multiple issues.

Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can fix these issues? I have to get this truck inspected and they wont do it until this stuff is fixed.

well I can tell you that more then likely the PO442 is usually just a simple loose or defective gas cap, very common code. Random multiple cylinder misfires means you should check your ignition system, plugs , wires, cap, rotor, maybe even ignition coil as well. Autozone can probably test the ignition coil for you. Insufficent flow in the egr system, remove the egr valve, and clean it up really well and clean out the egr passages on the motor, then tend to get carboned up and restrict flow, from what I understand certain year rodeos are known for this, there is a write up about it here. The last one there I am really now sure about, someone else would have to help you with that. I really dont think that either thing you replaced would be related except for maybe the sending unit could be related to that last code there. Good luck, hope I could offer some help!

Clean up the EGR system.


The misfire could be a leaky intake manifold gasket (that what mine was).

1) Check / replace the gas cap.
2) Clean EGR system per amigo-2K's FAQ's (assuming you have the 3.2L)
3) Clear OBDII codes by pulling power or with a code reader
4) See if any codes come back.

Random misfires can be caused by many things; EGR issues, leaky IMG as stated, dirty MAF, or most common- wrong spark plugs.
