Ok, I have a 1989 GMC Sierra 1500 automatic with a 5.7L V8. Yesterday I was in a parking spot, I turned my truck on and tried to put it in reverse. It felt like it was stuck, I pulled harder. Finally it made a snap sound (like something broke) and it went into gear. Well, I knew I was in reverse, but the indicator in the dash said I was half way between Park and Reverse. I put the truck in drive and it said I was in Neutral. Basically, when I put it in a certain gear, the truck would say I was in the gear left of it. Then today, the same problem happened. I tried to put it in gear, it made another snap sound. Now no matter what gear I am really in, it says Park. Please leave some input if you can tell me how to fix this problem. All advice will be greatly (spelling?) appreciated. Thanks

The shift indicator is moved by a cable that is attached to the shifter on the steering column.

You need to remove the instrument panel to get access to it. The shift indicator is probably stuck and you pulled the cable off the shifter. You may need to lube it or replace it (shift indicator).

You may also have to repair/replace the cable.
