400 crank?

hey i was just wandering how you tell what kind of crank you have. on my 383, i have a four bolt main, but just curious if i can find out the size of the crank.

cam too. i was told it was an RV cam when i bought the motor, but the guy didnt sound too sure. neither am i. any help on that?

take it to a machine shop.... they can measure it exactly and tell you. or you can try measuring it yourself.

measure the distance between where the connecting rods mount (the centerline of that point on the crank) and the absolute center of the crank (the point around which the crank itself rotates), in inches, and then multiply it by two. this should be the length of your stroke. if it is larger than 3.48 inches it's not a standard 350 crank.

i've never done this myself and the above is the theoritical approach of how to find about.... i might be overlooking something.

also, the cam isn't worth the time it takes to find the specs. sell it to the recyclers and buy a new one if you want performance, if you just want the engine to run and you don't care, lube it up and put it back in.]
Cams are cheap, $70-100 for a good one. Now is the time to do it, while you've got the engine out of the car. it will be a pain to do a cam swap later.

haven't been to the track yet... still not ready, need posi-trac rear and need to custom make 3" mandrel exhaust... starting on that next week. I'll post a full update tonight.
