HI there I have an 01 with the 4.0L, All of a sudden the other day it started idleing at about 1500 rpm and runing at about 1000 or so in gear. it only does it when the transis warmed up, It also will start shifting funny and at what seems like the wrong rpm. also tonight it the engine started overheating,it never got to redline but I made it home y then, tonight was the first time I put any miles on it since the trans started acting up. Two days ago I had my state inspection doe and it passed, and no check engine light is on, any suggestions or thoughts as to what it might be?

I think you should check your coolant level when the engine is cold - take the cap off the radiator and make sure its full. You need to make sure there is no air in the system.
Otherwise, it may be time for a new thermostat.
Once you have the cooling issue fixed, disconnect the battery for 10-15 minutes to reset the computer, and see if that takes care of it.

Yeah I checked to fluid, it is fine, another thing that might shed light on the subject, once the temp got near red-line or just short i should say, it all of a sudden tarted droping, I think it might be the thermostat, so that leads me to the question, Is it located where the water hose leads into the engine or on the radiator cap?? i know these are basic questions but after the problem I had with changing the brake rotor I'm not taking any chances. Again thank you for your help

Ok, sounds more like the thermostat. Its where the upper radiator hose is attached to the engine. You might want to buy an explorer manual at the parts store, or subscribe to alldata online so you have some help!
