OT? Transmission Service

Sorry this is out of place but I really couldn't find anywhere to ask this basic question and figured here was the best place.

My transmission needs a tuneup I guess, or to be serviced, I am just triyng to findout what are the standard lines of work for transmissions. I have a coupon to get a transmission flush, would this be equivalent to a tuneup or would that entail more work?

A mechanic friend of mine who checked out my car when I first got it said I should get the transmission tuned up sooner or later, now that I am looking to do it I want to see if I should just get it flushed or be looking for more.

And to note personally from driving it the tranny does seem like its off, it doesn't seem to get into the next gear smoothley and sometimes I find myself punching it just to get it into the next year and get my RPM's down.

Again sorry if this is out of place but it's a basic question so no biggie :D.
