I recently bought a 99 Grand AM GT and I am haveing some trouble figureing out why the electric door locks aren't working. When you press the lock button you hear a dinging noise but the doors don't lock, but if you close the door after you've pressed the button and you wait a few sec. the car will beep like it's been locked with keyless remote. If anyone has any ideas as to what the problem might be please let me know. BTW I've tried replaceing the door lock relays and that didn't help. Thanks

On my car, if you press the lock button once, it beeps, then 7 seconds later it locks automatically. But I dont have the keyless entry. If you press the lock button twice it locks the doors right away.

the lock button on the door or your keyless? My 99' is as townie15 said. ON the Door Hit it once, dings, locks in 5-6 sec. Hit it twice it looks then. the keyless door lock are programable i believe.

You probley wasted some $$ on those doorlock relays. THe beep is an indicator that it is getting ready to lock , "so grab those keys" . May hav some jam in the door switch making it not work right. But the beep is norm.

Your vehicle uses a control module which can be expensive if defective. With only a GM Tech II scan tool, the module in question can be acessed and commanded to lock/unlock the doors. If after commanding it, it fails to lock or you were unable to communicate with the module, chances are its bad....other than a blown fuse.

Thanks everyone for your replies as I am having the same problem as 78silverbird. I found that my locks were working for quite awhile and then all of a sudden just started to do the exact same thing as 78silverbird so I thought it might have been a resultant of the Viper alarm until I had the place that installed it unhook the lock feature and it continued the problem. I then took it down to the dealer and they said it was either the relays or the BCM. I wanted to test the relays but don't have a clue on how to do so along with I can't seem to get them out even with a lot of foce of pulling on them.
I guess next check is to take it back to the dealer and let them try to do the BCM deal and see if that bad or not.
Thanks for all you guys help once again...

The BCM's in Grand Am's and Alero's are mounted in a bad place, and are exposed to the elements, so they have a high failure rate. Most door lock, security system and instrument panel anomalies can be attributed to a damaged BCM. Just my :2cents:

I had the same prob. It was a simple fix for me. under the hood there is a maxifuse its a 40amp i think but i know it is the #2 fuse. mine took a crap all i did was replace it. hope it helps...
