AC operation during defroster use

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this subject, but figure I try... I have an 01 Civic and it was fitted with a dealer installed Air Conditioning. It works fine, but there is one thing that bugs me. When I switch the vent to window defrost, the AC comes on automatically, and I can't turn it off. I know that it helps to defrost fast with the AC on, but I don't feel like zapping a few horses with the AC on. Does anyone know how to turn it off during defrost mode?

One reason you want the a/c on sometimes in the winter is to lubricate the system, especially all the seals and o rings. It helps to prevent loss of charge. This isn't needed as much in newer cars as it is in older ones, but still holds true.
