Hi!
My name is Budd Cochran and I'm the "proud" owner of a 95 GTC with over 100,000 miles on it.
My eldest son gave me the car because he was concerned about how well I could get in or out of the old 79 D-150 pickup I had (in reality, the truck was easier, but no matter). He bought the car while serving in the Navy in Jacksonville FL.
While he had it he used dexron in the trans and now I'm trying to rebuild it, but I need some help, please.
I'm trying to get the L/R clutch pack installed and the picture in the manual I have (aftermarket) shows five steel plates and five clutch disks going in under the flat snap ring . . .but even with the thinnest plates and disks, the reaction plate won't fit far enough in to install the tapered snap ring and have the clutches keep any resemblance of clearance.
The trans is a rebuilt unit installed by a previous owner, (before my son bought it) while it was in Florida. When I removed the L/R pack it was made up of thick / thin plates and disks, but only four of each.
In a word . . . .HE-L-L-L-L P-P-P-P!!!!!!!!!
(and, yes, my son is still in my will He gets the LeBaron when I go. )

you'll need to get a spring compressor that can apply pressure to the clutch plates for you to put in that snap ring. When you have everything put back together, use nothing but Mopar ATF+3 or 4. If not, you'll burn that transmission up again.

Ok, I'm a bit confused here (this is only my second auto trans teardown and the last one was a 727). . .
When I tore the trans down, I don't remember a need for a compressor for the L/R- 2/4 clutches. And the book I have from ATSG doesn't show a need for one. Is it just the retainer that needs to be pressed down to install?
The reason for my confusion is the piston at the back end of the case (the L/R piston, wrapped around the output shaft) can't apply pressure to a set of clutches that are already applied (compesssed) from the installation, right? Most of my plate disk combos don't give enough clearance except for this last combination of five thin steels and five thin disks.
In one of my attempt to install the clutch set, I cut back to only four plates and four disks and ended up with a lot of clearance, but would only four of each handle the power the engine makes??
And I had a case of 7176 ordered by a local parts store (nearly $70 bucks worth!!!) because the nearest Mopar dealer is over 100 miles away in Grand Junction CO. Here's an interesting note about the local NAPA shop, for some reason, they refused to order the fluid and arguing Dexron III was "a universal fluid". Nor would they order ATF+4.
Thanks for the reply!

The 4 thin plates and steels go in first( and you do not need any spring compressor).then install the thin flat snap ring next install the pressure plate with step side down then install tappered snap ring.tapper facing up.then bevel spring dish side up align 1 of the outside tabs center of the notch at 6 oclock with valve body side of trans facing the front of you and then install tapperd snap ring it is easiest to have trans on bench pump opening facing up for reassembly.Bobbyd40 the trans rebuilder. If you need anymore help you can email me at [email protected]
