I have a 2001 Kia Sportage (115,000 miles) and this same issue has started to happen to me. I changed my oil filter also, but the pressure when reving the engine happens to pop the oil filter and oil sprays over the engine.

Went to mechanics and he mentioned to me that the oil fillter leak is occuring because of the oil pump is bad. That does not make sense to me because the oil is streaming out when the car is turned on.

Any ideas anyone???

I believe the oil filter adapter has a gasket between it and the motor block. Your oil filter is not leaking it is the gasket gone bad.
