Finally did something worth while in my life

Tonight i was going to pick up some things at the store, and outside of the store was this guy who was obviously down on his luck and asking for change. I had never seen this guy before so i knew he wasn't part of the usual bum crowd that hangs out and asks for change. He asked for a few bucks, and i almost gave him the change. Instead i had him follow me back into the store and had him pick out some food that he wanted, ended up he picked out $100 worth of groceries, i payed for him then offered him a ride back to where he lived, he declined and instead shook my hand. It was nice to be able to put a smile on the dudes face cause he looked completely depressed. I usually give them $5 but this guy just kinda seemed different. Yeah anyway, that's my good deed for the day.

Yay. That's so nice of you. I would do something like that, but there aren't many bums around here.

Good going Josh man :-) I normally give about 5 bucks.

I once was about to give a bum 20 bucks, but I didn't because there were like 5 other bums around I just noticed, and thought "I'llhave to give them all 20 bucks if I do this" so I walked away and got pissed instead. What an asshole eh.

That was really nice of you. Normally when I got into Chicago I give the bum sitting in front of McCormick a few bucks, but I've never bought anyone their groceries before.

That's damn cool man. You know I have a hard time wanting to give money to them. I've helped out in a soup kitchen a few times and that was actually quite a rewarding experience and very humbling. If I see a bum like you say "seemed different" then I'll definately help out I think.

I never give beggers any money. Why you ask? Because I once saw a bum (who is always on one particular corner) pack up his little bag, and walk away from his post. So being as bored as I was, I casually followed him around the corner and down a few blocks, where he jumped in the driver's seat of a fairly new Acura and sped off.

Besides, if I were ever in a situation where I had no job/house/car etc, sitting my lazy ass on a corner begging is NOT what I would resort to. So fuck em. They can find a job.

But Josh, don't get me wrong, I am in no way disregarding your efforts. I In fact, I greatly applaud you, and wish I could bring myself to do the same.

Yea man, props to you on your good heartedness. I don't think I could do that (unfortunatly, but beggers are beggers i generally see the same ones day in and day out.) Shit though, thats some balls to ask someone you don't even know to buy you $100 worth of grocery's. Seriously you're gonna have some good karma comin your way. Peace-

I always just ignore beggers, its their fault their on the street. I mean come on, its North America there are so many social services that could help them, they just dont want the help.

Anybody can get a shitty minimum wage job or go on welfare until they find a job.... unlike other poor countries where there arent enough jobs for everybody and most of the jobs dont pay shit (ex. eastern europe, most of south america, etc.)

I don't usually give money either. I've heard stories of people giving bums leftovers then they just throw the food in the trash. Anyways, That seems like an awful nice deed you did though.

I do believe that this is possibly the one and only issue that I somewhat agree with you on.

Yeah at Dad's office there was this lady who needed, but could nowhere near afford her glasses - yet she faithfully came in and made $1 or $2 payments every week - one time after she left, a guy sitting in the waiting room went up and paid the $50 or so left on the bill....

As for myself, I don't usually give either - having a job downtown back home, I always see the same guys, and I know that they are neither hurting for cash, nor spending what they have wisely. However, once, while on my lunch break, I had an early 20s or so girl, whom I'd not seen before, look up from writing something in a diary and ask for some change - turns out she'd just run out of her abusive house - gave her all I had in cash at the time ($20 or so). Never saw her again, but felt good about what I'd done.

BTW, I saw one of the regular bums bumming one of the other regular bums once :lol2:

I agree that people should make an effort to get jobs. I just have a guilty conscience if i dont help in some way. And i always remember this line growing up- “For I was hungry and you gave me food.” “When you feed the hungry, you are feeding me.”

Besides i'm used to feeding people, my roommate is broke as hell, i'm always buying him food.

Good job Josh. That was a really nice thing to do for the man. I usually don't give, just because I have this feeling that they're not going to use it for essentials, instead they're going to get drugs.

Fucking hate bums. Sorry, but it's true. They're fucking irritating as hell, and I don't give them a damn thing anymore. I used to, but I'm poor as shit myself and gotta look out for me.

yeah incase you dont know, a begging bum can make like 20,000 dollars a year. When i was in California, there was a guy begging. He took a milk crate and stuck leaves in it, then he would hide behind a bush and when you walked buy he would jump out and scare people. He asked that if he scared you, you gave him some change, or whatever. Well when he did it to me, i decided to talk to him. Turns out he was only doing it as a second job. He was making 20,000 dollars a year extra money doing that like 5 days a week for like 7 hours a day.

Think about, a bum standing on a corner with lots of people. Lets say 10 people an hour give him one dollar. He stays on that corner for 5 hours. 50 bucks a day, 5 days, 250 dollars a week, 1,000 dollars a month. 12,000 dollars a year. Yeah hes really poor. . .

Once when I was about to give a bum some money, my friend stopped me and said "don't do that, he'll just go spend it on alcohol!" So I handed him a small bottle of whiskey instead. Then I told my friend "there, now he can use his money for food!" :lol2:

actually, I think it was 60 minutes or dateline or something that followed some panhandlers around for a while, and they figured they made upwards of $80,000 a year.

I guarantee you this guy wont make shit where he's panhandling, on the UOFI campus, broke ass college students dont have money to give. Like i said though he didn't seem like the others i had seen out there. Most of our bums didn't get here until recently because Chicago tore the Cabrini Green subdivision down because it was so bad there.
