Winding engine noise

I have a 1995 740i that just started making an engine winding noise. Can anyone help with determining what this noise is and where the source of the noise may be located.The noise is noticable when the engine is revved up.Also the noise will stop for a few minutes after I restart the engine.Thanks for all your help in advance.
