engine wiring.

just a general question.
at the moment, i've been trying to wire up an italeri 250 GTO engine.
as of now, i've drilled out the elevant places using a 0.4 bit and have been playing with the 0.38mm wire from hlj.

only thing is, it looks like it's a bit too thick for the job.
what wires (or wire alrernative) do you guys use for this kind of job?

That wire is too big for a 1/24 Ferrari. The the wires should be 6mm, not 9+mm.
You should use .25mm wire. Even .3mm (7.2mm) would be better than .38mm.

is it an engine thing or is it a ferrari thing?
cos i also have an lambo lp400 engine that's in need of some detailing.
i mean, should i just stock up on some 0.25 wire for general use or would the 0.38 do for some other engines (like the lp400 v12)

and er.... where'd you find out about 1:1 sizes for things like wiring?

(edit)one more thing, where do the fuel lines from the carbs plug into?
i gather the one that points towards the front ends up at a pump somewhere at the front but where does the one going to the rear end up?

in that last pic. you can see that long thing on the top end of the engine, right?
this is the fuel line that runs from/to the carbs.
only thing is, i have no idea where these end up on the car/model.

can anyone tell me what that little box roughly in the middle of the image is. On the chassis, it's roughly directly underneath where the pedals go. My guess is that is either something for the brakes or something for the gas/accelerator. Can anyone clear this up?

www.littlecars.co.uk or something like that sell lots of engine wires for 1/43 and /`1/24.

Failing that, rip open a USB cable (if you have a computer with a no longer need USB device) and use the cable from this, it's around .3 or .32mm..

Telephone cable ripped open can sometimes give .3 cable, sometimes it's .4mm

Those fuel lines go to the gas tank, via a fuel filter (pump?) on side of the differential. They go along the left longitudinal frame tube.

what is this and where does it go to around the back?
and er... what are those two larget pipes?
are they the ones that run to/through the radiator?


incidentally, this is the first time i've wired an engine and looking through ref. pictures, i seem to be finding more little things that
i) aren't on the model
ii) i have no idea what they are

That pipe on the left side of the engine is a waterline that connects front and rear of the cam covers. There is a Y-shaped part On rear of the Italeri GTO engine, that is where this pipe ends.

Those two longer pipes are heater tubes they go from upper and lower front cooling tubes to the firewall.

does this look about right for a GTO engine?
correct me if i'm wrong as the details are built up from several different pics of different 250 engines, all of different periods.

the end at the front of the engine goes to the fuel pump.
the end to the rear goes directly to the fuel tank.
only thing is i can't seem to find where the fuel pump is sited on a GTO.
on a lusso, it appears to be an external part attached to the lower part of the front of the engine.
you mentioned that it's near the diff? are we talking about the same thing here?

so... do both ends end up at the fuel tank or just the one going directly to the rear?

Not entirely sure where the distributors are located either but i gather they're tucked up behind/under the back end of the engine near/on the firewall.

That pic of yours seems to be quite accurate. The fuel pump is located where the front fuel line ends at in your drawing. From the fuel pump that fuel line continues to the fuel filter on side of the diff (the brass/gold coloured part on my gto chassis). the rear fuel line goes straight to the filter. One fuel line goes from the filter to the left side of the fuel tank. I couldn't figure out where the other line goes , so i routed it to the front/top of fuel tank.

Distributors? they are those parts that are attached behind valve covers, I think you meant coils. Coils are located on firewall, one possible location can be seen on this pic:

These old ferraris are a pain to detail, they were ahnd fabricated and specs differed from car to car. To make things worse they were race cars and they had accidents and a lot of repairs. And of course most of them are now restored, so many things have changed during their "lifetime".

I also tried to do that on my Sauber Mercedes C9. The wires were also too thick, but for that you guys already gave several solutions.

What about the holes? How do I makes the holes on the engine body to put such thin wires like 0.3 mm? The thinnest drill I found was 1mm, and that's 3 times the size of the wire....

Search for micro drills on ebay, Google etc. Only thing is to try and get more of teh very thin ones as they SNAP!!! :)) and you will need more than one.

somehow, i lost 500mm on one side of a house i'm drawing up....

ok, i think i'm clear on the fuel lines now.
next comes the pipes to the radiator, would it be right if i just connect the top pipe to the top end of the radiator and the lower pipe to the bottom end?

and finally, where do the front end of the oil lines from the sump end up?
in your pic, all i can see is that they end up near the bottom right hand end of the radiator.

Thats what i did. I dont have any good reference pictures of that area

GTO has an oil cooler in front of the radiator. I connected the other on top right and the other on lower left corner of scratchbuilt oil cooler.

Books and magazines are usually the best reference material for me. There are many pics that are hard to find from net, but are published on books. For GTO i googled for a month (at least a long time) to find enough references. Many classic car restoration companies and sellers have websites that have great photos from cars they are selling/restoring.

Try www.ferraris-online.com for instance.
