Rattle in engine compartment

Hey, I have some rattle in my engine compartment and I can't figure out what it is. It sounds like its coming from the back of the engine but I can see it. I'm not sure what it could be.
My girlfriend's cavalier z24 makes a lot of noise when you dont change the oil for about 7000 miles so I was thinkin that might be it. I'm not sure though.
Any info?

change the oil, could be the power steering pump though, its on the backside though

Could be the bearings. The previous owner of my 2000 Celica neglected to change the oil on a regular basis, therefore ruining the bearings. Good luck!

Sounds like my problem. When I went to get my oil changed the guys at valvoline said my oil was pitch black and starting to get kinda chunky.
Well now the sounds has got worse and now there is knocking sound in my engine that is starting to get louder and louder as the day go by. I have an appointment at the local toyota dealer next week. I have an extended warranty on my car so I hope that stuff is covered.

remove the powersteering pump belt, sounds like the noise my truck makes when the powersteering fluid is gone

Alright well today I drove down to the local cub about 10 miles away and my engine started to make lod, very loud noise coming from the engine. My car couldnt get past about 60 MPH. Well when I was about 1/2 home something went "CRACK" and my engine automaticly died. It has power, enough power to start then engine but the starter doesn't move ANYTHING so it just clicks and sits there....
Any suggestions?
I have an extended warranty, but the worst part is that it has been sitting on the side of the road ALL THANKSGIVING. So I was screwed today for they towing.

holy shiet! what kind of abuse have you done to your car so far? :P It seems like your engine already misfires and then blew. If you cant get past 60 mph, thats serious shit. The damages could range all the way from engine internals to transmission... you cant even go past 60...thats amazing... Btw, did you ever check your timing belt? mb your piston and valves collided....

according to toyota, that is impossible, they have enough of a gap to keep them from ever truely touching

Nah dude, I just bought it and babied it. I has been in the shop 3 times for stupid stuff and now this. The person before me must have beat on it bad.
When I started to drive it was acting good. Then I pulled up to a turn lane and the car started sputtering. Then it was driving it was making mad noise and then BAM sounded and felt like something blew out. I went out of the road and I looked for it but I cound not find anything.
I hope the toyota dealer calls me back today and I hope that they dont charge me anymore then the deductible.

Alright guys. Well I got a call back from the dealer and they told me it was the starter......
I said "no way, look again, I don't think my car would die if the starter went out."
They looked again and then they called me back and told me bad news.
The rod and the piston bearings blew through the block and therefore I need a whole new engine.
Does anyone know why this cound happen? Someone told me it was probably water in my engine and then someone else told me it was because I didn't change my oil but valvoline tole me it would be ok because I put full synthetic in there and he said it would last up to 8000 miles. Considering I only put 7000 miles on my car since I got it, I don't think that it was my oil.

first
all celcia eninges all the way back to the 22re's are non-interface motors, the pistons cannot hit the valves...and if the timing belt breaks there can be no damdge done to the head
water would not do that, i have sucked up probably close to 1/4 gallon of water in my celica (thoguht i could make it thorugh a puddle going up to this 4 wheeling spot), hydrolocking is easy to remove, just pull the spark plugs, pull the 2 wires on the distributor and crank it over till all or most the water is gone, put everything back together, whats leftover should just blow out the exhuast valves.
not chaning the oil for that many miles/water would not cause taht, something fucked up eitehr causing massive dentonation, or someone could have neglected to cahgne oil before you, if it was chuncky chances are the rod bearings and the mains failed causing this, thats my giuess if you heard a rattling sound, that the rod bearings failed and a rod broke loose

ooh, I never knew that :P I thought all engines can collide piston-to-valve up to this day, hence timing belt.... but anyway, waht kind of misuse can break a rod's bearing? unless its manufacturer's fault, or boosted/revving out of sense (which isn't)... better make sure the warranty covers all that stuff.

Alright, well they told me that they're going to buy me a new engine. They are ordering it from the toyota manufacturer and i'll be getting my car back by next tuesday. :)
Now my next project is to ruin my transmission so I can get a brand new one

i wouldnt try, toytoa is usually stingy about transmission failure (acutally aalll places are) all they have to do is prove that you miss treat the tranny (if its a mnaul) and they wont replace it
thats good your gettign a new motor
another reason why toyota is superior to honda, they use non-interference engines, with interfereance motors you can also kiss a valve by mis fiering

Alright, thanks a lot for your guys help. I'll post another message on here once I get my new engine :)
Oh yeah and my celica is an automatic so do you think they are still picky on the transmission or no?

in that case, no, but if its fine i wouldnt fuck with it, theres always a chance that they will say it got fucked up cuz hte dirver
a guy i know had a 350z and the engine sprung a pretty bad oil leak, they tire to say it was cuz of driver abuse, after only about 1000 miles, theres no way that could happen, he got it replaced after some fighting, but it just goes to show you how stingy dealers can be

I dont think matics are that easy to ruin. I mean, theres not much play in it, unless you're shifting rear gear- to stop your car or something. yeah, actually if dealers find broken teeth in your transmission, they'll say you're liable for misuse/ racing use... BTW, intereference engines... is it classsified by each engine type, or simply by manufacturers?? (i.e honda-inter , toyota-non inter) how can you tell, and how 'common' is this type of engine?

MOST (not all toyota enignes) use this, go and buy a chiltons manual itll tell u if your enigne is or isnt (4afe, 5sfe and 3sgte are non-interferance engines, hence why poeple can use 4agze pistons on a 20v 4age motor w/out cutting the new fly in it becuase it wont touch)
and i say honda uses interferance because almost all of them are, the D series are interferance, so are B and i beleve the K series is the only one that isnt but dont quote me on that
that prety much means if we break a timing belt, oh well get a new one and ur good to go, if they break one, your eitehr $1000 down if a shop rebuilds ur head or if you got the knowhow to do it you just wasted a couple hundred plus hours of time rebuliding it, plus theres the chance that the valve can actually break the piston

Well there is 53000 miles on the car right now. I don't think the transmisssion is going anywhere soon but I bought a 48,000 mile/2 year extended warranty when I bought the car at 46,000 miles approximatly.

tranny wont go anywhere anytime. I wonder if dealers will ever do auto to manual conversion for a ruined tranny case...
the mechanic I once knew is always paranoid about timing belt, and then he told me all about its use and everything...a friend of mine just bought a camry and the belt was the first he inspected. Scary thought, since its so close to the engine, and during hard use, you never know what could happen. Sometimes I wonder why wont they use gear system instead from the start...
Anyway, 01 celica GT, hows your car running now?

Yeah, my co-workers told me that if my transmission was ruined the dealer would to a manual conversion for the cost of all the labor they needed more to go like the clutch and the clutch pedal and stuff.
I would rather have a manual anyways but my car was such a good deal at the time that I couldn't pass it up. I can see now why it was a good deal because the engine was about to blow butI got it fixed.
I don't get my car back until tuesday or wensday. So i'll tell you when I get it back.

o. I see now why you've wanted to ruin your tranny....only "labor" huh? but then again dealer's labor is a bitch. They'll charge you 5 hours for 2 hours work at $80/hour. smm--art.

yeah dude, thats crap. They over price everything. When I first got my car my idle was REALLY low so I said "wtf, you guys sell me a junk car so fix it" well they brought it in and they charged me 106$ to "clean the throttle body"
They said it was not covered in the 30 day warranty.
Thats really gay
And it didn't even fix the low idle....
