1995 engine removal

i went to advance autoparts to price replacement engine for fun(it was 4300 hun!) i had them look for the 95-99 and all of them have the same part no. and casting no. showing it would be the same block. i need to replace my engine. i already know the electronics do not interchange from obd1 and obd2 but wouldnt that mean the block they would sell me would be the same also meaning the shortblock would work out of the other 96 - 99 to go in my 95? i know it is alot of stuff to change over but thats fine. oh btw can the engine come out from the top or does it have to come out the bottom. if u got any tips for me to make it easier,let me know please~!

Do not attempt without factory repair manual. Engine and trans were designed to be removed together as the powertrain module out the bottom, assuming it's going to be done at a dealer or shop with a vehicle lift. Not for the home mechanic using an average engine hoist. Not to say that it can't be done, just way more work and time and cut-up hands. Is that price for a new, not rebuilt, GM crate engine? When I ordered my engine the dealer told me the part numbers were different for '95-'96 and '97-'99.

You can remove it from the top, BUT you have to remove the tranny first. Using the '97 shop manual instructions to replace my oil pan. I removed the tranny, but after finding cracks in the block. I decided to replace the engine. With the tranny removed I noticed that the only thing that was holding the engine, was my top engine supports and the right engine mount. So I purchased an engine hoist. And lifted it out from the top. You also have to remove the radiator for clearance. And while liftiing the engine, you have to pull the hoist forward a little at a time, to clear the front of the engine compartment. If I have to do it again, I would remove the engine & tranny from the bottom. I understand doing it this way, involves detaching everything,having the drivetrain set on a cradle, and lifting the body up. I believe I can do it, but would need a chain fall and a cross brace. What ever you do, remember safety first. Sometimes death can be only 1mistake away.

BTW, I went to Advance auto, and they quoted a price of $4328.88 plus the core price of $550.00. for a remanufactured engine. Believe it or not, this is close to the dealer's price for a brand new engine.

That's for sure! Especially when you consider that they were never designed to be rebuilt. I was expecting $7k when I ordered mine and was happy to pay the $5200.

kiway,what year of aurora do you have? on the engine tip i might as well take both out through the bottom. it will be a winter or early spring project anyway,i will have plenty of time to be careful! btw what is a chain fall and a cross brace? im not familiar with these. i think im gonna find a engine from 95-99 with decent miles and strip to the longblock anyone have any particular points for me on the removal?
