fuel filter on a 01explorer

Hi there I have a 01 exp. and am trying to rplace the fuel filter, I have the special wrench but can't figure out exactly how to use it, where on the conector do I put the wrech, it looks like the conector has 3 steps to it? any advice? I feel like an idiot trying to figure this out, P.S. how do I get the pressure out of the line?

That's funny. I have the tool too, and haven't taken the time to figure it out.
You MUST relieve the fuel pressure.
One way is to do something to the inertia switch (which is under the pass. seat somewhere.
Another way is on the fuel rail.
I'm not too much help, I'm more of a carb guy.

After relieving fuel pressur remove the saftey clips.
Then take the tool and slide it inside fitting from the filter side. Press in on the tool and press fuel line fitting in towards filter. The rotate the tool a little. And while holding in on the tool pull gas line fitting off of filter.
Takes a little practice. And if you get one that someone has tryed to pull off without useing the tool.
They are a pain to get released.

so the tool is supposed to slide under the fiting along the inlet to the filter and then me with it till it comes off, I think I got it, But I think I hae the wrong size tool, even withh the smallest prt I on't think I will fit, but the fuel pressure? that seems to be the next thing I should be trying to figure out..... ad i thought this would be easier then the brakes i did last weekend

Under the passenger side dash at the top of the carpet along the firewall is your fuel shutoff switch. The one that shuts your car off in a rollover. Pull the connector off the switch with the engine running, and the engine will die. Look in your owners manual or search this site for more if you need it. Look for the reset button on top of it to help you identify it.

As to the tool, slide it over the fuel filter inlet/outlet pipe. then slide the tool TOWARD the fuel line. It will slip INTO the fitting between the fuel filter pipe and the fuel line connector. Press the tool into the fitting as far as you can, then while holding the tool, try to slip the fuel line off the fuel filter pipe.

If you have the 5/16 tool it will probably take several tries. A 3/8 plastic tool will work on the first try usually. The tool pushes some spring clips on the inside of the fuel fitting back (Outward) so you can slip the fitting off the fuel filter pipe.

I think that is about the best answer I can get, thak you for you time, I really appericate it, I'll let you all know how it worked out tomorrow, Thanks again, and yes they did sell me the wrong tool, a 3/4 5/8 1/2 3/8 combo tool.

I followed instructions above. after I pushed the tool in as far as possible and pull the filter, I felt nothing move. but, when I took the tool back off and then gently pulled the filter, the filter came right out. other end the same. they difinitely click back in though.
