1996 Taurus Transmission

I had the transmission re-built on my '96 Taurus approximately 15 months ago. It had been running fine until this past weekend. I placed the car in park and left the engine running for 30 seconds to get out and check one of my tires. When I got back in and tried to put the car in drive, nothing happened. I can't get the car out of park. The gear shift moves but the car will not go into any gear or neutral. Could this be the transmission or simply the connection from the gear shift to the transmission?

I know very little about transmissions. Please help!
