black pad/stuff in the interior

I recently gutted the rear of my rex and I noticed this black padding/covering in several different places and it looks like its stuck on pretty good. Does anyone know if its safe to remove this stuff and whats the most efficient way to go about it?

I know the black stuff your talking about. its a tar susbstance used to deaden sound, if i remember correctly. The only prob is i dont know how to get it out. I remember either SuperStreet or SCC did it to there 99 civic si....now if i could only remember which issue that was....

You might try a hairdryer. I haven't tried this myself, although we did use a hairdryer to remove the pinstripe...

I've heard of a few different methods...

1.) Use a blow-torch and a putty knife (sounds messy).
2.) Wait until the middle of winter and chisle it out with a hammer and a putty knife or chisle or something (I think this is the method they use on Tammy Faye Bakers face).

Either way, sounds like a beeaaatch, but if you're serious about speed, it'll lower your weight a little...

Direct from my newly gutted CRX Si-I used a combination of a chisel edged putty knife and 16oz hammer. I also used GOOF OFF concentrate after getting the larger chunks out. Material bought at Home Depot.
The rear is harder to do than the front, but be patient and it will come out. I did try using Adhesive Remover-don't do it as it is a paint stripper type product and very messy. As to hair dryers and torches-don't bother. At least this is my experience.
BTW: Do have some cans of Rust Oleum Spray ready as you will break thru the paint on the metal.
There is no harm done taking all of it out, including the stuff around the metal plugs in the floor.

its called undercoating, not that black rubbery stuff

I heard over at the CRX resource that the easiest way to do it is to use dry ice. Set some on it for about 30-60 seconds then hit it with a hammer. Breaks off in big pieces.

Never tried it, but i heard it works.

Dry ice is the way to go. There is a guy in town with a 92-95 hatch with an h-22 and he has no interior except the drivers seat. Thats what he did
