Noises, bad ones

Ok, my 94 v6 manual has been making a weird noise recently. The noise is more of a loud vibrating with a little squeel(sp?) It occurs after the car has sat for a long time and only when im in gear. I take it out and it stops but then trying to get it back into gear is a pain. I have to use alot of force to push it in gear. The noise occurs in every gear while its still warming up. I can even hear it while shifting sometimes. Once the car has warmed up, it stops. Im guessing clutch problems. Anyone else?

thrust bearing (motor) or throw out (fork) bearing would be my guess, with strong hopes it's the throw out.

It's more than likely the release/throw-out bearing. A thrust bearing in the engine will not squeal, due to the fact that it's on the crankshaft and receives an ample amount of lubrication.

is it a easy fix? its really annoying me. its embrassing when you have to drive and everytime i come to a stop, while its still cold, it happens and when i take it out of gear i cant get it back in.

Pretty much count on replacing your pressure plate and clutch along with the throw-out bearing - you'll have to remove the transmission to get to it anyways and the clutch will be right there. Check the surface of the flywheel too - it might be a good idea to take that off and have it surfaced. It definitely reads like a bad throw-out bearing and when those go, they almost always take out the diaphragm spring on the pressure plate, leading to the hard-to-shift condition you are experiencing. When this happens, the clutch does not fully release.


While you're in there, replace the pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft. They are not expensive at all and can be easily removed by filling the hole with axle bearing grease, then inserting a pilot alignment tool into the hole and then giving the tool a good whack or two with a hammer.
