93 cherokee not starting

I have a 93 cherokee and a couple of weeks ago I noticed it wouldn't start. I had to turn the key over a few times and then it would start but now it has got worse and now it won't start at all. When I turn over the key I hear no noises except for my fuel pump, When I turn it over the entire way the guage on the top left jumps to the top. I hear no noise from the starter, I replaced the starter relay and that didn't do anything. Any suggestions on this matter would greatly be appreciated.

I had a similar prob with my 94 cherokee and someone here recomended to have the CPS (crank positin sensor) replaced. Problem solved. I beginning to think that Jeeps are built with inferior electrical technology.

Do you know where the CPS is located and how easy is it to install?

You can see a drawing of the CPS here (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/15/24/5f/0900823d8015245f.jsp) (Second Picture - assuming inline 6 cylinder).

It can be a problem to get to, but not impossible. When I changed mine, I used several extensions and a swivel to get the socket on the bolts that hold it on. Had to come from below, next to the drive shaft.

Good Luck.

If its not turning over it could be the starter itself, try tapping on it with a hammer and see if it will start.

Ya I tried that too and it still won't crank over, just a surge ovf power and the guage jumps.

I found out the problem and it's the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch) I have to slam it in park and put into neutral just like jigglin the toilet seat handle. Someone in this forum has a article on changing out the NSS but I can't remember who I printed it off along time ago. check around though.

The easiest way to change out the NSS if it's a 4 speed automatic is after you remove the adjusting bolt pry up the tabs and loosen the big nut almost all the way but leave it still on then use a flat head against the transmission pan to pry it off.
