recently, my s-10 blazer has had problems starting. when it sits overnight, i have to turn it over for more than a few seconds before it gets going. when i turn it off and start it within a short time, say 10 minutes, it starts right up. could this be my fuel pump causing me problems? i guess i shouldn't complain too much considering i am close to 180,000 miles.

every time you turn your key, listen for the fuel pump 2 second energized prime, if its not there its the pump for sure (a hummmm sound) but, just because its there doesnt mean the pressure is up to snuff

my '01 2.2 has been doing the same thing w/ a brand new fuel pump... i'm thinking it might be the erg now... you should check that too.

I wouldn't think that it is the fuel pump, they generally go out all at once. Check your fuel lines for pressure at the plenom fitting in the morning to see if the fuel is bleeding back into the tank over night.

As was already suggested, before cranking the engine let the fuel pump run until it builds system pressure (you'll hear it run for a few seconds then shut off) before cranking the engine.

Also.... when was the last time the fuel filter was changed? It lives alongside the drivers side frame rail about half way back.

You probably have throttle body fuel injection (looks like a strreamlined carb) and cleaning the injectors is relatively easy. Get a can of spray carb cleaner (some good stuff lke CRC or Gumout) and take the spritzer straw and bend just the very end of it up so it points upwards. You want to be able to insert the straw into the throttle body and direct the stream upwards to the underside of the injectors; this is where the fuel spray comes out and is just about impossible to clean unless you modify the little straw.

Run a double dose of Chevron's Techron in a 1/2 tank of gas. Yes it's expensive but it works very well; you'll waste your money with the other "pour-in-the-tank" injector cleaners.

the fuel pump is a positive displacement pump and it should hold pressure, if its not then the pump needs to be replaced. thats not to say it still doesnt work great when its warmed up.
