2000 Cherokee liftgate problem

I have a 2000 Cherokee Sport, and the liftgate won't open. I can hear it unlock with the keyless entry, and have tried unlocking it with my key, but to no avail. I want to try to access some part in it to find out the problem, but I can't seem to get at the mechanism without the liftgate open. Does anyone have any ideas. Thanks in advance

I had the same issue w/ my 90. You will have to remove the liftgate cover. There are several screws to unscrew, and then it is held by the push-in connectors, be careful when pulling them out they are prone to break (you can buy new ones at the auto parts store). The problem with mine was a broken spring on the right side of the mechanism. You should be able to flip the lock with a screwdriver once you have the cover off and open the gate.
