Any tips on replacing a passenger side axle on 98 villager

Get a good service manual and it should lead you threw it.
You will have to seperate the lower control arm from the spindle. Usually at ball joint stud.
A quick snap or tap will usually remove the axel from trans.

MT-2500 is right about the service manual. There are some special procedures for doing this. First, don't use an impact on any spindle nut, as this can damage the CV Joints. Don't reuse the spindle nut. Once the axle is back in, tighten spindle nut AFTER the vehicle is back on the ground. Also, there is a certain torque spec. that the nut MUST be tightened to, to properly set wheel bearing preload.

I agree make sure you get the complete axle that carrier bearing is not mentiond in any book or repair but if its not replaced you will eventually here what sounds like your car engine riding on the chassis eveytime you hit a bump. I had both axles replaced at the same time and it got ride of that problem. It is not hard to DIY but you will need jack stands at the least to support both sides at the same time otherwise it is a standard replace procedure.

I think my front axles on my '99 villager are going bad and I'm going to try and replace them myself. Given that you replaced yours by yourself, any step-by-step instructions (with pics) good enough for a true beginner?

Also, can each side be replaced independent of the other or is it easier and less time consuming to replace them at the same time?

I had mine done at different times and it was fine. It only cost me $200 per side to have it done, including the alignment. You should shop around before you DIY it, its not that expensive to have done.

It can be done now and later your choice. It is not possible for me to do a right up since it has been done so long ago. MEMORY IS SHOT but my mechanic charges 45 a side plus the axles
