Catera Problems

I have a '97 Catera. The driver's door retaining bar (the one that holds the door open) seems to be broken. I have heard that this is a common problem with the Catera and that GM knows that it is a manufacturer's defect. Can anyone corroborate this and give me any help here. The GM dealer wants almost $1000 to make the repairs.
