Replacing Rotors

Hi, I need to replace the rotors on my 3.1 98 Lumina. Brakemasters want to charge me $400+ to do it, but I would like to attempt the job myself if its not too difficult. I changed the brake pads but the wear on the rotors has screwed up the new pads already. Can someone advise me on how to change my rotors? and also, where I can get a decent set of new ones? I was told I couldn't turn the ones I have, but I dont know anywhere I can go to get them turned anyway. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

very easy to change these out. jack up car, take off tire, take off and set aside caliper, rotor should slide off, slide on new one, and reassemble.

Sometimes the rotor will rust to the hub and need a little hammer action to convince it to let go.

yeah if you had the pads off then thats all you had to do was pull the rotor right off, but with the new one in you may have to push the piston back into the caliper to fit it over the new rotor. a nice sized c clamp works wonders

And DO NOT get suckered into buying cheap-junk Communist Chinese rotors. Every parts store you go to will quote you a very attractive price on them. Expect to double that price to get quality pieces that won't wear prematurely because of low-grade cast iron, or get overly hot because the Chinese left out half the internal cooling fins.

I paid $80 apiece for front rotors from NAPA for my '92 Lumina .

im paying $60 per each new front rotor im about to put on, they are ACdelco Performance rotors. my brother works at a GMC/Pontiac dealership. and he ordered them for me. also for good prices on lots of stuff check out www.rockauto.com they have the same rotors im getting on there for around the same price.

Before putting the rotors on the car,put them on a brake lathe.New rotors can be warped and I have seen that.If you see any wavyness,turn them.I have seen new ones warped so bad that they had to go back to be exchanged for for two more new rotors.

well the parts guys at my bros dealership said they couldnt get the Performance rotors. so i am getting OEM lol, they are $22 a piece ACdelco OEM rotors. lol i hope these are not too crappy. i mean they are the orig.

You have a lot to learn about original parts.

My '92 Lumina came from the factory with front side-marker lamps that had "Made in Canada" molded into the plastic.

The replacement parts--which I bought new from the local Chevy dealer, and took home the un-opened box--were made in Communist China.
