Paint Stripping Problem

Hi,

I kinda stuff up when I was spraying my F40 model. I used both enamel and lacquer and now the paint has cracks.

I have been unsuccessfully trying to soak the body of the car in brake fluid. I know it works because I had another model i wanted to respray and after 1 night the paint nearly slid off. but the ferrari will not budge after 5 days in the brake fluid.

Any suggestions on how to remove the paint?

Odd. DOT 3 /4 always works for me. Have you tried 99% Isopropyl Alcohol?

Yeah Not sure what dot it is, but its castrol brake fluid.

Will try to obtain some Isopropyl Alcohol. hopefully its over the counter stuff here in australia.

what about methylated spirits? i know thats like 99% alcohol, with a touch of ethanol in it so u can't drink it. would that work too?

Try using oven-cleaner. This can strip paint very quickly, found better on enamel/ acrylic than on lacquers though.

And if ya don't find what you need there . . . I've used Lestoil and Pine-sol to strip stubborn paint off of delicate resin and diecast before with the same "slips right off" results . . . Worth a try. .

I also have a model that need to have paint stripped. It is a heavily modified 996 (from a 996 GT3 to 996 Turbo) with lots of putty work. Is oven-cleaner safe for putty?

from my personal experience, the oven cleaner chemical ate away the putty... (tamiya basic putty). not sure about other putty type.

I went to my chemist and purchased like 25ml of 99.5% isopropyl alcohol. $2.50! :eek: Sometimes I wish i was a yankie instead of an aussie!

Sounds like i could get isopropyl alcohol that is about 60% - 70% for alot cheaper. Obviously it would take longer but will it still work effectively?

One last question on the Alcohol. Would Methylated spirits be ok? That stuff here is like 99.5% Alcohol and .5% Ethonal. what does the ethonal do to plastics?

It is painted with Tamiya Can, and putty is the Epoxy (2 mixed in 1) type.

For stripping Tamiya TS, use isopropyl alcohol. Soak in covered container, scrub loose paint with toothbrush. Shouldn't be a problem for your putty work.

Methylated spirits should do the same as isopropyl. I use isopropyl because its cheap here- if it wasn't, I'd use methylated instead.
